After Mello's departure though. All consistency between everyone in the orphanage was broken. This includes Matt and Near. Matt sank into some kind of depression for losing his buddy, Near blames himself for letting Mello go.

Near's always there for Matt during his ups and downs. But he couldn't help but feel small in comparison to Mello, who was always number one for Matt because they're buddies. He wants Matt to notice him more, rather than come to him in his needs only.

Near couldn't forget Matt, or Mello for that matter (But we'll focus on Matt because this is a Matt/Near fanmix after all). Every night he'd dream of lazy summer days, afternoons in autumn and cold winter nights when they were children. His mind completely stuck on Matt.
